JUNE 9, 2009 PRIMARY ELECTION UPDATE
~ Early Turnout Figures Consistent with SBE Expectations ~

Though morning storms caused four polling locations to lose power, election officials followed contingency plans and minimized voter inconveniences or delays until power was restored. Voting equipment was not affected by the power loss due to backup battery systems. Forecasts call for more storms across the state throughout the afternoon.

Both the Bellamy and Round Hill precincts in Virginia Beach were locked down for approximately 45 minutes due to a gunman in the vicinity. Reports indicated that one voter in Virginia Beach was asked to return at a later hour due to the lockdown. Also, one polling place in Prince William County followed its contingency plan and opened in a parking lot until the precinct building was unlocked.

“Virginians who still wish to exercise their valuable right to vote may do so until the polls close at 7:00 pm,” said Secretary of the State Board of Elections, Nancy Rodrigues. All eligible voters in line when the polls close at 7:00 pm will be permitted to cast their ballot. For more information, please visit the State Board of Elections website at www.sbe.virginia.gov.
