The Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors has just begun its budget retreat at the Courthouse fire and rescue station. Its first action was to amend the agenda to add a motion to appoint Deputy County Administrator Doug Barnes as the acting county administrator.
Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of the appointment. Barnes thanked supervisors for the vote of confidence and told outgoing County Administrator Randy Wheeler that he is sad to see him go. Barnes said it will be a smooth transition and he will work very hard for the county. Barnes has a long history with Spotsylvania. His best friend, Ernie Pennington, also is a deputy county administrator. Barnes previously served as public works director and director of solid waste for the county, and he was also a rescue captain.
Wheeler resigned last week and his last day is Nov. 30. Barnes starts Dec. 1, a Monday.
