The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with local and state agencies, private businesses and citizens from Louisa, Orange, and Spotsylvania Counties, dedicated the new Louisa County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit Saturday, April 18, 2009.

Sheriff Ashland Fortune and Major Donald Lowe presented a new 2009 Pro Line center console patrol boat and two 2008 FX SHO Yamaha wave runners that will be utilized to patrol Lake Anna to provide safety and security for the thousands who enjoy the recreational activities the lake affords. The Sheriff’s Office began a fundraising campaign over four years ago to create the Marine Unit.

“It has been a long process, but we’re finally here and ready to go,” Sheriff Ashland Fortune stated. “The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to providing effective, efficient law enforcement to solve community problems and create a safe environment for our citizens and visitors.”

Chairman Willie Harper (Mineral District), Supervisor Dan Byers (Jackson District), participated in the dedication along with Senator R. Edward Houck, Delegate William Janis, Brad Franklin, Government Relations Executive Yamaha Corporation, Chris Manthos, American Watercraft Association Magazine, Mike McAllister, Office of Commonwealth Preparedness, Joe Ricks, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, North Anna Power Station, Lake Anna Civic Association, several community groups and local businesses.

Major Donald Lowe said, “The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office is grateful for the fundraising efforts of so many organizations and individuals. The Marine Unit will allow us to further the Sheriff’s Office’s mission of maintaining peace, providing safety and security and deterring unsafe boating practices.”

“The Board appreciates the tenacity these folks have demonstrated,” Chairman Willie Harper, Louisa County Board of Supervisors said. “The Marine Unit represents the effectiveness of public-private partnerships and the cooperation needed to reach a common goal. ”

The public event was held at Anna Point Marina in Louisa County.
