GOVERNOR KAINE APPOINTS STATE TREASURER
~ Action follows retirement of J. Braxton Powell ~

Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced that J. Braxton Powell will retire from the position of State Treasurer of Virginia on December 31. The Governor also announced the appointment of Manju Ganeriwala as Treasurer effective January 1, 2009.

“Braxton Powell has been a rock of continuity at the Department of the Treasury, making sure our treasury management systems work smoothly. His steady leadership will be missed.” Governor Kaine said. ”Manju Ganeriwala brings a proven record for financial analysis and management that is in keeping with the high standards that Virginia holds as one of the Best Managed States in the nation. She will continue to provide effective and strong financial management for the Commonwealth.”

Mr. Powell was named State Treasurer of Virginia in January 2006. He previously served as Deputy State Treasurer beginning in 2000. He has been with the Department of Treasury for 25 years and a state employee for 40. After graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in finance, he began his career on January 8, 1968, as a field tax representative for the Virginia Employment Commission in Roanoke. Treasurer Powell is a native Virginian from Suffolk.

As Treasurer of Virginia, Ms. Ganeriwala will serve as the Chairwoman of the Treasury Board of Virginia that has oversight for the investments and debt management of the Commonwealth.

Manju Ganeriwala has been Deputy Secretary of Finance since January 2006 where she has served as an advisor to the Governor on all financial matters of the state, including crafting the budget, developing revenue forecasts, issuing debt, maintaining the AAA bond rating and maintaining Virginia’s status as one of the best financially managed states. She previously served as Deputy Director for Finance and Administration in the Department of Medical Assistance Services from June 2000 to January 2006. She has worked in state government since July 1985.

Ms. Ganeriwala holds a bachelor's of commerce degree from University of Bombay, Mumbai, India; and a master's of business administration degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

Treasurer Powell noted, "I am grateful for the opportunity to have served in the Kaine Administration. It has been a pleasure serving the citizens of Virginia and working with so many dedicated state employees over the past 40 years
