On Wednesday, July 15 at 2:30pm, Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) will chair a Senate Foreign Relations Committee Hearing, entitled “Maritime Disputes and Sovereignty Issues in East Asia.”
As chair of the Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Senator Webb scheduled Wednesday’s hearing to examine China’s strategic goals in the region, specifically the country’s role in maritime territorial disputes involving the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, and the Spratly Islands, and Paracel Islands in the South China Sea. The hearing will also seek to clarify the impact of these actions on the United States and countries involved in these issues.
Witnesses will deliver testimony focused on the strategic and economic implications of China’s long-term pattern of behavior in the East China Sea and South China Sea including, among others, how this behavior impacts sovereignty issues with Southeast Asian nations and the role of the U.S. and organizations such as ASEAN in resolving disputes.
