COMMUNITY DAY PUBLIC SCHEDULE
~ Fifteenth Cabinet Community Day Session to be held July 29 ~

Fredericksburg Cabinet Community Day

Governor Timothy M. Kaine, his Cabinet and members of his senior staff will conduct their fifteenth Cabinet Community Day on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 in the Fredericksburg area. This is the third Cabinet Community Day of 2009.

The Governor holds four Cabinet Community Days every year, visiting eight regions of the state twice over the course of the administration.

In 2009, Cabinet Community Days have been held in Southwest Virginia on June 5 and in Martinsville on April 9. In 2008, Cabinet Community days were held on the Virginia Peninsula, Fairfax, Staunton, and Petersburg. In 2007, sessions took place in Southern Virginia, the Eastern Shore, Roanoke and Charlottesville. In 2006, Cabinet Community Days occurred in Hampton Roads, Abingdon, the Shenandoah Valley, and Northern Virginia.

Wednesday, July 29

ARRA Weatherization Event and United We Serve Service Project. Governor Kaine and members of his Cabinet and senior staff will join the Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging to highlight the increased funding for the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s Weatherization Assistance program as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Governor and Cabinet will perform weatherization work at the home of Katherine Smith as part of President Obama’s call for a summer of community service through his United We Serve initiative. The Governor and Cabinet will work alongside a crew from Christiansburg-based Community Housing Partners, a weatherization contractor that has doubled its staff and projects over the last 8 months in response to increased demand stemming from the newly available weatherization funding. Germanna Community College Stafford Center Ribbon Cutting. Governor Kaine and members of his Cabinet and senior staff will help cut the ribbon on Germanna Community College’s new Stafford Center. The fourth location of Germanna Community College—which will have four classrooms, computer labs, and office space—is expected to offer 52 classes this fall and serve approximately 1,000 students. The Center is a partnership between the school and Stafford Economic Development Authority which has invested $300,000 over three years to promote economic development through workforce training. The center will also meet anticipated needs associated with the BRAC expansion at Quantico and the new Stafford Hospital Center. Open to the press and public.

Business Sales Growth Seminar. Governor Kaine and members of his Cabinet and senior staff will attend the Virginia Department of Business Assistance’s Fredericksburg-area Business Sales Growth seminar—an advanced seminar providing interactive discussions with experts on growing sales by targeting appropriate government and private sector markets. Governor Kaine and Secretary of Commerce and Trade Patrick O. Gottschalk will address and meet with attendees. Federation of Virginia Food Banks Check Presentation and United We Serve Service Project. Governor Kaine will present a ceremonial check for $1 million to representatives of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks. Governor Kaine recommended the money as a budget amendment in the 2009 legislative session to help meet the basic needs of Virginians during hard economic times. Following the presentation, the Governor and members of his Cabinet and senior staff will participate in the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank’s Food for Life program as part of President Obama’s call for a summer of community service through his United We Serve initiative. The Food for Life program prepares boxes of nutritious food for delivery to low income seniors and persons with disabilities. Open to the press and public.
