Chesapeake City Manager William Harrell announced this week the appointment of Cecil Earl Sorey Jr. as the new city engineer of the Chesapeake Public Works Department, effective August 1. Sorey has been serving as the interim city engineer since June 2008 following the promotion of Eric Martin to public works director.

Sorey will be tasked with managing the engineering division which has 70 employees and an annual operating budget of $7 million. The engineering division is responsible for the delivery of a $120 million capital improvement budget consisting of transportation and stormwater projects. As city engineer, Sorey will oversee traffic engineering; stormwater design; right of way acquisition; design and construction services; surveys and drafting; and environmental engineering. Sorey’s salary will be $96,086 per year.

Sorey began his engineering career with the city of Chesapeake, and later served as an engineer in the cities of Virginia Beach and Portsmouth prior to his return to Chesapeake in 2001 as the city’s transportation engineer. Sorey holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering technology and a masters of public administration, and is a licensed professional engineer.
