Funds for Local Communities to Purchase Public Safety Vehicles, Provide Services
Senators Jim Webb and Mark R. Warner Tuesday announced that the Department of Agriculture (USDA) will release $1.2 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to provide grants or loans to 31 localities and non-profit organizations to fund community facilities and emergency responder projects in Virginia.
“The funds announced today will help support rural communities’ efforts to protect and serve their residents by providing essential public safety services,” said Senator Webb. “The projects selected are designed to spur economic growth and help rural communities provide greater access to health care, support first responder efforts, and finance libraries, schools and day care centers.”
“We cannot leave any region of our Commonwealth or country behind as we make these down-payments on some long-neglected projects,” Senator Warner said. “These investments will help create jobs and stimulate economic activity in many of our rural communities.”
The funding provided through USDA Rural Development’s Community Facilities program will help finance and develop facilities for public use in rural areas including childcare centers, hospitals, medical clinics, assisted living facilities, fire and rescue stations, police stations, community centers, public buildings and transportation. Funding of individual recipients is contingent upon their meeting the terms of the loan or grant agreement.
