Completes Nearly $360 Million in Investments in Virginia’s Military
Facilities from 2009 Economic Stimulus Package

US Senators Jim Webb and Mark R. Warner today announced that the Department of Defense will invest an additional $28 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for 34 Virginia projects to repair U.S. Army facilities at Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Eustis, Fort Lee, Fort Belvoir and Fort Myer.

Last month, Senators Webb and Warner announced $330 million in stimulus funding for construction and restoration of Virginia military facilities, which represented 80 percent of the funding allocated for military projects. Today’s announcement accounts for the remaining 20 percent of that funding.

The projects are designed to repair aging infrastructure, improve energy efficiency, improve our nation’s military capability, and create jobs for Virginians. These improvements to military installations include upgrades to hospitals, child development centers, and housing for troops and their families.

“The $28-million investment announced today will provide much-needed maintenance and modernization of Virginia’s Army installations and stimulate economic growth at a time when Virginia’s communities need it most,” said Senator Webb, a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. “Properly maintaining Virginia’s military facilities and bases are as important to the livelihood of the Commonwealth as they are to our national security and welfare of our service members.”

“These investments will create jobs and, in many instances, they allow us to upgrade our military facilities for energy efficiency and conservation,” Senator Warner said. “Perhaps more importantly, these projects will improve working conditions and quality-of-life issues for the men and women of the Army and their families.”
