US Senators Jim Webb and Mark R. Warner today announced that the US General Services Administration (GSA) has released more than $66.3 million to renovate and modernize five of Virginia’s federal buildings as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The funding will upgrade Virginia buildings to be more energy efficient. The GSA’s Public Buildings Service selected the projects based on two overarching criteria: the ability of the project to put people back to work quickly, and transforming Federal buildings into high performance green buildings.

“Modernizing our federal buildings to perform more efficiently will create local jobs and save future taxpayer money on energy costs,” said Senator Webb. “This funding will provide the necessary resources for communities to properly invest in public buildings and spur economic growth in the area of energy efficiency.”

“These projects were selected because they promote energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, and create construction and renovation jobs relatively quickly,” Senator Warner said. “More importantly, these projects support the expansion of Virginia’s ‘green building’ industry, and that’s important for our state’s longer term economic vitality.”

Virginia’s high performance green building modernization projects listed below:

- Poff Federal Building, Roanoke $50,968,000

- Richmond Robert Merhige Courthouse, Richmond $3,500,000

- Martin V.B. Bostetter Courthouse, Alexandria $1,699,000

- Advanced Systems Center, Reston $690,000

- Franconia Warehouse, Franconia $9,512,000

The Recovery Act directs $750 million to renovate and construct federal buildings and courthouses, $300 million to renovate and construct land ports of entry and $4.5 billion to convert federal buildings to high performance green buildings.
