February, 2009

* Lane Ramsey, former Chesterfield County administrator, has been appointed interim administrator for Goochland County.

* Dale Mullens, county attorney and interim administrator for Louisa County, has been appointed administrator there.

* Joe Vaccaro, town manager for Cape Charles, resigned, along with the mayor and another member of the town council. Heather Acros, assistant town manager, was appointed interim manager.

* Shannon Scott, assistant county administrator for Wise County, has been appointed administrator there. Karen Mullins, county attorney, has been appointed assistant administrator.

* Sandy Wanner, James City County administrator, announced that he will stay on until summer 2010 to help guide the county during these very tough economic times.



January, 2009

* Suzette Denslow, legislative director and deputy policy director for Governor Kaine, has been appointed chief of staff by Mayor Dwight Jones of the city of Richmond.

* Charlie Burgess, city manager for Poquoson, resigned 1/12/09 after previously announcing plans to retire April, 2009. Judy Wiggins, city clerk, was appointed acting manager.

* Greg Wolfey, long tenured administrator for Goochland County, announced that he will resign from that post effective February 1st.

* Kirby Bowers, administrator for Loudoun County the last 17 years, announced he is retiring from that position to become executive director for the Triangle J Council of Governments in Raleigh-Durham, NC. Deputy administrator Linda Neri will serve as interim county administrator.



December, 2008

* C. Lee Lintecum, administrator for Louisa County since 2000, has announced his retirement effective 12/31/08. Dale G. Mullen, county attorney, will serve as interim administrator.

* Thomas B. (Tom) Noland, former manager for the cities of Martinsville and Franklin, and the towns of Altavista and Pulaski, and former assistant manager for Waynesboro, died at the age of 93.

* Bryan Foster, administrator for Halifax County, resigned from that position effective 12/5/08.

* Sandy Wanner, administrator for James City County, announced he will be stepping down from that post effective 7/1/09.

* B. Clayton "Clay" Goodman III, administrtor for Montgomery County, has been appointed administrator for Roanoke County.

* Lara Burleson, town manager for Kilmarnock, resigned effective January 15, 2009, and has been appointed town manager for North Topsail Beach, NC.

* Jerry Gwaltney, retired Danville city manager, has been appointed interim administrator for Halifax County.



November, 2008

* John V. Doane, former city manager of Lexington, has been appointed city manager of Covington effective 11/1/08.

* Randy Wheeler, county administrator for Spotsylvania County, resigned effective 11/30. Deputy county administrator Doug Barnes has been appointed interim, effective 12/1.

* Susan Scott, town manager of Onancock, has been terminated.

* Herb Gilsdorf, town manager of Exmore, resigned effective 11/30. Artie Miles, zoning administrator, will serve as the interim manager.

* Thomas J. Swartzwelder, county attorney for King and Queen County and a member of the law firm of Kaufman & Canoles, has been appointed county administrator and zoning administrator for the County. He will continue to serve as county attorney, but will resign from the law firm.

* Doug C. Walker, former city manager for Waynesboro, is now vice president/consultant for Springsted, Incorporated.



October, 2008

* David Whitlow, town manager for Dumfries, has accepted the position of administrator for Essex County. His end date in Dumfries is 11/2. David replaces Gary Allen, who is retiring after 17 years as Essex County's administrator.

* Travis Quesenberry, interim administrator and former county engineer for King George County, has been appointed administrator there.



September, 2008

* Denise Thompson, executive secretary for the Virginia Local Government Management Association, and director of marketing and member relations and environmental policy for the Virginia Municipal League, has accepted the position of manager of environmental protection programs for the city of Norfolk.

* Jeff Muzzy, who worked for Chesterfield County and Prince George County in the 70's and 80's, the city of Norfolk as assistant city manager starting in 2003, and most recently for ICMA in Serbia and Lebanon, has been appointed manager for the town of Culpeper.

* Michael E. (Mike) Long, former assistant city manager in Emporia and town manager for Dumfries and Bowling Green, and, for the past several years, professor of political science and history at Pasco-Hernando Community College in Florida, passed away at the age of 58 after a brief illness.

* Betty Thomas, former Montgomery County administrator, and the first female administrator in Virginia, died at the age of 70.

* Glenn Steckman, administrator for King and Queen County for the past 3 months, announced his resignation effective 10/1.

* Michael Hamp, interim manager and former assistant manager for the city of Waynesboro, has been appointed manager there effective 10/1.



August, 2008

* A. Ray Griffin, Jr., Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission executive director and former Danville, VA city manager, has been appointed city manager for Henderson, NC.

* Brenda Garton, former administrator for Prince George County, has been appointed Gloucester County administrator.

* Pat Murphy, a consulting engineer and former mayor of Big Stone Gap, has been appointed town manager for that community, replacing the retiring George Polly.

* Claire Collins, former city manager of Covington, has been appointed administrator for Rockbridge County.

* Christopher Lawrence, assistant to the town manager for Blacksburg, has been appointed manager for the town of Vinton.



July, 2008

* David Garrett, town manager for Appomattox, announced his retirement effective February, 2009.

* Tracey Shiflett, community and economic development director and zoning administrator for the city of Buena Vista, has been appointed town manager for Clifton Forge.

* Evan Vass, town manager for New Market, has been appointed assistant city manager for Harrisonburg.

* Chris Boies, planning and zoning director for Shenandoah County, has been appointed town manager for New Market.

* Sherry C. Hunt, a former Verizon employee, has been appointed chief of staff for the city of Suffolk.

* Rowland "Bucky" Taylor, manager for the city of Frankin, has been appointed executive director for the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA).

* W. Glenn Steckman, III or Salisbury, Maryland, has been appointed King and Queen County administrator.

* John Chambliss, assistant administrator for Roanoke County, has been appointed interim administrator.

* Shannon Scott, assistant administrator for Wise County, has been appointed interim administrator.

* Lyle Lacy, III, deputy manager for the city of Danville, has been appointed interim city manager.

* William C. (Bill) Porter, Jr., assistant administrator for James City County, has announced his retirement effective September 1st.

* Sheila Hill-Christian, chief administrative officer for the city of Richmond, resigned, saying her ability to do her job had been compromised.



June, 2008

* Don Austin, administrator for Rockbridge County for 36 years, has announced his retirement, scheduled for sometime in August.

* Michael Hamp, assistant city manager for the city of Waynesboro, has been named interim manager there.

* Claire Collins, city manager for the city of Covington, resigned effective June 30th.

* John Rowe, Jr., ICMA/VLGMA range rider, has been appointed interim town manager for Windsor.



May, 2008

* Jay Scudder, planning director for Gloucester County, has been appointed administrator for Patrick County.

* Ned McElwaine, long time deputy county administrator for Botetourt County, has announced his retirement.

* Doug Walker, city manager of Waynesboro since 2003, resigned effective 6/30/08.

* Jerry Gwaltney, city manager of Danville for the past 10 years, announced his retirement effective 6/30/08.



April, 2008

* Glen "Skip" Skinner, administrator for Wise County, has announced his resignation effective June 30, 2008 to assume the executive directorship of the LENOWISCO Planning District Commision.

* Linda Martin Warner, assistant county administrator for Accomack County, stepped down from that position effective July 1st.

* Bryan David, administrator for King George County, has been appointed executive director of the Region 2000 Economic Development Council.

* Steven Templeton, retired assistant police chief for Bristol, Tennessee, has been appointed town manager for Gate City, replacing Ms. Lynn Moore.

* Ronald Hachey, administrator for King and Queen County, has resigned. Administrative Assistant Diane Gaber was appointed interim administrator.

* John Kines, former Prince George County administrator and current member of the Commission on Local Government, has been appointed interim administrator for Prince Geroge County.




March, 2008

* Elmer Hodge, long time administrator for Roanoke County, announced his retirement effective June, 2008.

* Ralph "Joe" Emerson, Jr. - county administrator of New Kent County prior to joining Henrico County's planning department in 2002, has been appointed planning director for Henrico County.

* Eric D. Campbell, assistant manager for the city of Petersburg, has been appointed assistant manager for Charlotte, NC.

* Brenda Garton, administrator for Prince George County, resigned that post effective April 30th.



February, 2008

* Bill Whitley, former administrator for Gloucester County, has been appointed assistant county administrator for New Kent County.

* Lane Ramsey, retired administrator from Chesterfield County, has been appointed interim administrator for Gloucester County.

* Lara Burleson, acting manager for the town of Kilmarnock, has been appointed manager there.
